It’s difficult for us to be impartial, but we honestly believe some of the most beautiful beaches in Ireland are located along the Kerry coast and luckily for us, Tralee has several of those gems dotted along the shore to the north and south, all within a short driving distance of The Rose Hotel. Depending on what you want – sun, sea and sand or fun on the water (sadly, we can’t guarantee the sun) – follow the Wild Atlantic Way signposts and you will hit upon the perfect spot for you. Here are some of our favourites:
Banna Strand
Banna Strand is one of Kerry’s most spectacular beaches, renowned for its golden sands, rolling dunes, and breathtaking Atlantic views. Located just 12km from The Rose Hotel, this Blue Flag beach is ideal for scenic walks, swimming, surfing, and family outings. Rich in history and natural beauty, Banna Strand offers visitors the perfect opportunity to experience the wild charm of Ireland’s west coast.
Ballyheigue
Ballyheigue is a spectacular Blue Flag beach on Kerry’s north coast, popular with families, locals, and visitors alike. The beautiful sandy shoreline offers stunning views of Ballyheigue Bay, Tralee Bay, and the Brandon Mountains. At one end of the beach lies Black Rock, a small island accessible at low tide, while the village of Ballyheigue is known for its traditional pubs and coastal charm.
Fenit Beach
Fenit is a charming seaside village just 10km from Tralee, home to a sheltered Blue Flag beach that is perfect for swimming and family days out. Overlooking Tralee Bay, visitors can enjoy scenic coastal views, a marina filled with colourful boats, and a popular ocean-themed playground. Fenit is also a hub for water sports and outdoor adventures, while its rich maritime heritage is celebrated through its connection to St Brendan the Navigator.
Ballybunion Beach
Ballybunion Beach is one of Kerry’s most iconic coastal destinations, renowned for its golden sands, cliffs, and breathtaking Atlantic views. Popular with walkers, swimmers, surfers, and families, this Blue Flag beach is also home to the spectacular Ballybunion Cliff Walk, offering stunning views of the coastline and the Atlantic Ocean. The vibrant seaside town of Ballybunion, with its cafés and traditional charm, makes it a perfect destination.
Inch Beach
Inch Beach is one of Kerry’s most spectacular coastal destinations, famous for its golden sands, breathtaking views, and dramatic setting between Tralee Bay and the Dingle Peninsula. Popular with surfers, swimmers, walkers, and families, this Blue Flag beach offers excellent conditions for water sports and outdoor activities. Known for its appearance in several famous films, Inch Beach is a must-visit destination along the Wild Atlantic Way.
Derrymore Strand
Derrymore Strand is a peaceful beach located a short drive from The Rose Hotel, offering stunning views of the Slieve Mish Mountains and Tralee Bay. Popular with walkers, swimmers, and nature lovers, this unspoilt stretch of coastline is known for its tranquil setting and nearby nature reserve, which supports a variety of rare plant species and important birdlife habitats.
